If I try the same exercise with my Twitter handle 'docuguy' I get a listing of my Twitter posts, my stories on Storify and my Pinterest listings - all of which are closely associated with the name 'docuguy.'

I just typed in 'personal training' and I can see that the global search volume for this keyword is 823,000, which indicates that a lot of people are searching the net for personal training; this is positive and negative.
The positive is that plenty of people are searching for that combination of keywords; however the shear volume suggests that you will probably never rank for those particular ones, in fact you may be lucky to make the top 100 pages as there is a lot of online competition.
Get specific!
So what you need to do is try new combinations and be more specific in your personal training keywords.
As I mentioned, promoting your personal training blog or site to a specific geographical community is probably the 'easiest' way to rank highly.
One way to come up with a keyword strategy is to think about what you would search for to hire a personal trainer in your local community. Let's say 'personal trainer Melbourne'.
Let's go back to Adwords and try 'personal trainer Melbourne'. You can obviously adjust your search terms to your specific city or town; however for the purposes of this article I'm just using my local region.
The result for this keyword search is 3,600, which is much more positive.
You will also notice that the keyword tool offers a variety of results and by changing the term to 'personal trainers Melbourne', the result is significantly different (1,600).
To become even more specific, you may want to narrow down your search even further. I just tried 'personal trainer Richmond', which is a suburb just outside of Melbourne where my imaginary studio or gym is located and the result is much smaller.
On the surface this may seem like a bad result, however, the people who are searching for 'personal trainer Richmond' are a very specific and targeted audience that are more than likely genuine business prospects and you are in a very good position to rank well for this term if you follow a few simple SEO procedures when you're writing your content.
What now?
There are many different reasons why websites and blogs rank in search engines the way they do, some of which contribute to:
• The volume and consistency of content
• The age of the blog or site
• Keyword usage throughout the blog or site
For the purpose of this article I'm not going to go into any details about different types of links or the 'pagerank' of a site, other to say that the previous 3 factors do contribute to it but I will cover this topic in more detail in future articles.
So using our keywords 'personal trainer Richmond', you need to start using them in every post and even in the name of your blog or site.
To rank for a blog post, there is some SEO etiquette that suggests that you should use your keywords in the title of your post, in the first paragraph of your post and then intermittently throughout your article.
We could write an imaginary article as follows:
[Post Title] Richmond Personal Trainer Now Available!
[First Paragraph] "Are you looking for a personal trainer in Richmond? Well look no further!"
And then using the terms a few more times throughout your article...
The SEO rules
Now, the trick with this is that you have to be careful with how you word and format your post.
If you use your keywords too often, it will become annoying to read for the consumer and there is also information to suggest that Google will recognise a heavily repeated keyword post as spam and you will get no rankings.
A rule of thumb is to read your article aloud to yourself and if it sounds corny, then it probably is.
With blogs, each post is its own SEO entity, so the above strategy is fantastic and while Google will establish a theme to your blog with consistent keyword usage, for the most part you will rank one post at a time.
Websites are different to blogs in that Google reads the entire website via 'sitemaps' and a few other things to ascertain what the site is about and where to put it in relation to search engines.
If you reread this article, you will notice that I have followed the principles that I discuss in this post using the keywords 'personal training blog SEO'. I used the terms in my post title and flipped them around in my first paragraph to make it more pleasing to read.
I also used the terms several times throughout the article and sneakily added them again in the previous paragraph.
Depending on how you came across this article should also determine how well I have used the principles.
I hope this has given you an idea of how to re evaluate how you're writing your online content. Keep in mind though, the minute you start writing for the search engines and not your human audience, your content will not make any sense and be boring, so try and find a happy medium and then everyone wins.

Why SEO is Like Running the London Marathon

On Sunday 26th April 2009 I ran the London Marathon. Well, to say I ran is half true, as I ran 14 miles and then hobbled 12 miles, due to some very dodgy and tired calf muscles. Still, I beat Jordan home, who was also hobbling due to a dodgy knee. But what has all this got to do with SEO? Well, during 6 hours and 38 minutes (ok, not a time to boast about but I still got a medal and just beat the sweepers) I had plenty of time to think. Being better at SEO then I am at marathons, thoughts turned to my latest SEO campaign. It was then I started to think about the parallels between SEO and Marathon running. See if you can spot the similarities:
1. Research is important - I knew what time the trains were, where to get off, what route to take. The same with SEO, unless you know the keywords to target, the ones with decent traffic and low competition, then you are probably going to miss the start of the race and may even end up not finishing.
2. SEO is not a sprint - One of the problems on Sunday is that I went too quick at the start. I was foolishly trying to break 5 hours and I just wasn't fit or lean enough to do that. As a result my body started to complain quite loudly (and painfully). Same with SEO, if someone promises you results within days, then you can expect those results to be short lived. Much better to accept that SEO is like running a marathon and the longer you are in the race, then the better the longer term result will be.
3. Adjust your sails - I didn't plan to lose one calf muscle and then the next. On both occasions I had to change my race plan and in the end that plan included just gritting my teeth. So it is with SEO. Sometimes your initial strategies won't work. Sometimes you will need to rest, take a break, do something else. But if you keep an eye on the finishing line, then you will get there, one way or another. Sometimes it is BETTER to slow down, give Google Girl a chance to catch up and appreciate your efforts thus far.
4. Determination - As mentioned, sometimes it just takes determination to get there. If one strategy doesn't work, then try another. If link building isn't working, then try some forum posting, PR, article marketing, Twitter, social bookmarking.... need I go on? The keyword is determination and that should be the first one on your list in EVERY campaign.
5. Look for inspiration and encouragement - On Sunday, over a million people cheered the runners on. They also gave them sweets, pieces of orange, sandwiches, biscuits. All little things. But enough to keep you going. So it is with SEO. Monitor your targeted keywords. Celebrate when those keywords are at #22. Of course, that position will not get you any business, but it is progress (assuming that it's moving in the right direction). Even if it's going the wrong way, you can use that negative news as inspiration to change strategies. What I am saying, is that SEO, like long distance running, can sometimes be a lonely pastime. It's at times like that when you need to dig deep and look for good news and use that news to propel you forward.
6. The reward is at the end - If you don't finish the marathon, you don't get a medal. Instead you get excuses and a despondent feeling. The same with SEO. Unless the complete the task, you can put a lot of effort in for little reward. If you, or your SEO 'Specialist', don't know what they are doing, then you are going to waste a lot of time, effort, money and motivation on a marathon effort, that will ultimately get you no where.

They don't review your site and they claim they have reviewed it.
2) Ignore those who don't report your site pros and cons:
If that SEO who claims has reviewed your site, should be able to see the positives and negatives about your site. Simply ignore those who are simply saying they have visited but report you nothing in return. In fact those who have done research would submit their researched report. You should know what is good on your website and what is that requires to get improved. Logically your hired SEO would give you all the changes that needs to be implemented and he shall also include its positive effects as well.
3) Ignore those who don't give you a fixed quote:
Ask for a price. If they say, we need to see and quote you later. Don't agree to pay anything for reviewing and quoting. Go for a detailed proposal. Unless they don't report you in detail, don't hire them. Check on what they are offering and what they are charging. A fixed quote with proper SEO proposal is required before you agree to anything.
4) Ignore those who don't give you estimated achievements:
KPI (Key Performance Indicators) has to be decided in advance. That's what you pay for. If the results are not achieved, your investment goes wasted. You get nothing in return. There is no point hiring that SEO who can't even promise you estimated results.
5) Ignore those who are at distant:
I don't mean necessarily you should ignore. But when you have options available locally, why hire an offshore SEO for this job. Increase more employment. Be a country man. Honestly, dealing with local is more enjoyable than dealing with an unknown offshore SEO guy. Try hiring local SEO for your SEO services. If you don't find SEO locally, at least try to find someone who is based within the country. Mostly, you will find some who works at your rate and fit within your budget. Language barrier will of course be there all the time as mostly they are poor in communicating in English.
6) Ignore those who don't show you their previous success:
Ask for previous examples where they have been successful. You need to hire a professional and experienced SEO for your site. If he has performed well, he doesn't need to approach you. He would get more referring clients on its own.
7) Ignore those who didn't perform on their own website:
Check what they have got for their own website. Did they really do well for their own site? If not, you can also ignore them. You cannot trust anyone who is unable to perform on its own website. Ask the list of keywords they have targeted for their own website. Verify them. In this case, I would even insist to hire an offshore SEO company if they did well doing SEO for their own website.
